MEGIDDO
Megiddo
is situated on the Via Maris. It was a major battleground in the past because
of its strategic location and importance - connecting
the towns in the center of the country with the sea. It is related in the New
Testament that Armageddon (Megiddo) is where the final
battle between the forces of good and evil will take place. Megiddo was one
of the walled citystates taken by Joshua. Excavations
carried out in 1925 revealed twenty cities superimposed one on top
of the other at the Megiddo tel. The oldest of
these cities dates back to 4,000 B.C. Remains can be seen of a partially restored walled
town with superb gates. Excellent models explain the complicated archaeological
complex. An underground water tunnel linked the
inhabitants to the water source located beyond the walls. A Canaanite temple,
palaces, storehouses, sentry towers and soldiers'
quarters were all contained within the walls.
