AKKO
The
story of Akko, like that of most of the cities in the fertile crescent, goes
far back in time. The first written evidence testifying
to the existence of the city dates to almost 4,000 years ago, for its name appears
in the Tel el Amarna tablets
dated around the 14th century B.C. Throughout its long
history, many conquering peoples have laid claim to this hospitable
port. It thus became Aka of the Greeks, Ptolemais of Ptolemy 11 Philadelphus,
Colonia Claudia Felix of Emperor Claudius, Saint jean
d'Acre of the Crusaders and Akka of the Arabs. .
